We recently wrapped up a 22 Creedmoor build with a specific request – that it be an absolute laser beam! We put this rifle together with a 24″ barrel and set out to max the velocity with some of our custom ammunition built specifically for this rifle.
First and foremost, this is a guide and should be treated as such. Lot to lot differences in components, ambient temperature differences, and different rifles can yield drastically different results. Do not attempt any of the processes or procedures shown or described in this guide. Assume any reloading data supplied in this guide to be in error. Always consult multiple sources of manufacturer’s ammunition reloading data before reloading your own ammunition. The content in this guide – in its entirety – is for demonstration purposes only.
Case: Alpha
Primer: CCI 450
Powders:
The Berger 80 VLD has been our go to bullet for the 22 Creedmoor since we started wildcatting the cartridge shortly after the release of the 6.5 Creedmoor. Its high BC and consistency pair perfectly with the velocity window the 22 Creedmoor operates in, allowing the cartridge to really shine at distance.
It has also proven to be extremely effective in the field. At 22 Creedmoor velocities the 80 VLD expands very reliably, making it devastating on coyotes while still providing plenty of performance for deer sized game when placed correctly. That combination of accuracy, forgiving load development, and real world terminal performance is a big reason it has remained our bullet of choice for the cartridge.
H4350 is likely the most universal 22 Creedmoor powder available. It will run good with 75-80 grain bullets in barrel lengths from 16 to 26 inches, is temp stable, produces great velocity, and is typically the most accurate powder choice.
However, in this instance, we had the opportunity to really step on the gas pedal with a 24 inch barrel and I knew leaning into a slower powder would be needed to provide the additional velocity we were looking for. The question was whether we would get the accuracy we require at the upper velocity window.
VihtaVuori N560 turned out to be exactly what we were looking for. You can’t stuff enough in a case to pressure out in Alpha brass, and as you can see from the ladder test it shot great across a wide velocity range. We settled on a full case charge of 46.8gr for an average velocity of 3560 with exceptional accuracy.
If you have a longer barreled 22 Creedmoor, I’d encourage you try to N560. I believe it has the energy to produce great velocity even in barrels as short as 20 inches, which is something we’ll certainly have to test soon!
